The New Canaan Society started as a small men's Bible study in the New Canaan, Connecticut, home of Jim Lane. Jim, his wife and three daughters had just moved to Connecticut from London, where they had spent the last four years. Jim realized that for various reasons men find it difficult to form meaningful friendships, and consequently when faced with career or family problems, tend to be isolated and cut off from the much-needed support of friendships. As a result, Jim felt compelled to form a fellowship group/Bible study with other men in the community. Jim and this small group of men began meeting every week at seven a.m. in Jim's family room. Before long, others joined them. When the small group took a road trip to a PromiseKeepers event in Washington DC in May of 1995, something seemed to coalesce, bonds were formed, and since then they have never been quite the same.
They continued to meet every Friday morning at seven over coffee and donuts (taking July and August off), and gradually and steadily the group grew. As the weeks passed more and more speakers began to volunteer their services. Before long the group size had increased and each week there was another dynamic speaker. In 2000 after Os Guinness and Luis Palau spoke to the group, the numbers jumped to more than a hundred men and there was no turning back.
Currently, the New Canaan Society meets every Friday morning in Darien, CT at a special place we call the NCS Clubhouse. In addition, New Canaan Society hosts guest speakers throughout the year, helps facilitate occasional conferences, and organizes a popular annual men’s weekend retreat.
